The Second World War ended almost 1 year prior and tension between the United States and Soviet Union is beginning to transpire.

Exactly seven year after Churchill's "Iron Curtain" speech, Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin, General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and Chairman of the Council of Ministers, dies suddenly of a stroke.

Georgi Malenkov is subsequently named premier and first secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union one day later.
